When asked to analyze an author's style choices, the student can identify that the writing 'sounds good' or 'is detailed' but cannot name specific techniques or explain how particular word or sentence choices create meaning. There is no awareness that how something is written shapes what the reader experiences.	In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald uses a lot of really good language to show what's going on with the characters. Gatsby is always trying to sound fancy and important because he wants people to think he's rich and cool and belongs in their world. He says stuff like 'old sport' all the time which is kind of weird if you think about it because nobody actually talks like that. Nick is the narrator and he describes things in a really detailed way that makes you picture what everything looks like.
